SaskCanola and SaskFlax Announce New Collaboration

January 4, 2023 – The Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission (SaskCanola) and the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission (SaskFlax) have announced a new management collaboration.

Operating out of one office in Saskatoon, this collaboration will mean efficiencies for both crop commissions by providing a full staff complement to support both Boards. Oilseed production in Saskatchewan has grown significantly over the past 30 years.

“As 2023 begins, SaskFlax is pleased to announce new management. Finding administrative and operational efficiencies within our industry ensures that growers’ levy dollars are put to the best use. Our commissions were created with similar mandates and key focus areas – research, extension and market development. We are excited about the opportunities this arrangement brings to oilseed growers,” says Greg Sundquist, Board Chair of SaskFlax.

“We recognize the importance of having a strong voice speaking on behalf of all Saskatchewan growers by successfully conveying a clear message. A lot of flax growers in our province are also going to have canola in their rotation, so it makes sense,” says Charlene Bradley, Board Chair of SaskCanola.

Canola and flax levies will continue to be collected separately. In addition, SaskCanola and SaskFlax will maintain individual Boards of Directors and separate governance structures.

SaskCanola is a producer-led organization, established in 1991 and supported by 20,000 levy-paying Saskatchewan canola producers. SaskCanola’s mandate is to grow producer prosperity by providing value to canola producers through research, advocacy and market development.

SaskFlax is funded through a check-off on sales of flaxseed and flax straw. Since 1996, the commission has worked to develop the flax industry for the benefit of growers. Activities include funding research and promoting flax to domestic and international markets.
