SaskCanola Commits $836,227 to 7 New Research Projects

January 10, 2024 - Today, Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced a total of $14.7 million to support crop-related research in 2024. Invested through Saskatchewan's Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), the commitment includes $12.2 million for 56 ADF research projects and $2.5 million to support an SRI project identifying solutions to manage root rot in pea and lentils. In part, SaskCanola is proud to announce its commitment of $836,227 to support 7 new research projects over the next 5 years under the Sask ADF.

The diverse range of canola research projects funded through ADF includes: 

  • Jeff Schoenau, U of S – Land Application of Spent Filtration Earth from Canola Oil Production to Improve Soil Properties ($45,310) 

  • Steve Robinson, AAFC – Innovations to control troublesome weeds ($82,875) 

  • Charles Geddes, AAFC – Understanding, mitigating, and managing PPO inhibitor (Group 14)-resistant kochia ($30,000) 

  • Harmeet Chawla, U of M – Marker development and establishment of qPCR-based screening for verticillium stripe disease in Canola ($129,375) 

  • Mark Smith, AAFC – Identifying new genetic resources to optimize the canola oil profile ($127,600) 

  • Sean Prager, UofS – Studying Sclerotinia sclerotiorum-infecting viruses collected from Saskatchewan for their potential role in disease control ($313,375) 

  • Rex Newkirk, UofS – Development of a Co-Extruded Canola Meal and Pea Starch Product to Replace Dietary Soybean Meal ($107,692)
